This book offers the results of an extensive US government effort to review the field of chemical engineering and make recommendations for its future development and contributions. The multiyear study was carried out by leaders in the profession, to provide a new vision for the community of chemical engineering educators, government program and industry leaders, and prospective students. Issues related to sustainable development (decarbonization of energy, water conservation, food production, advances in medicine and health care, and new materials) are included in the new vision. Chemical engineers are important leaders in the transitions currently in progress to increase the contribution of electricity produced from solar energy, improve battery storage, reduce the cost of electric vehicles, and improve air quality. This "Consensus Study Report," freely downloadable from the publisher, is an important reference for working chemists, engineers, and environmental professionals, as well as for high school students and the general public. Among the important themes is that the scale of data collection has increased with advances in computational capacity, making good use of data essential. Multidisciplinary teams are growing in importance, too, so educational experiences working on real projects in teams are advocated in one excellent chapter focused on undergraduate and graduate education. Several good appendixes provide supporting details.Summing Up: Recommended. All readers.
