![]() This work adopts a newer approach to presenting geography, emphasizing people's relationships and connections to the physical environment, economies, culture, and politics in various regions of the world. Editor Muehlenhaus is director of GIS professional programs at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Part 1 includes five essays on key geographical themes written by subject matter experts: "Mapping and Technology," "Regional Geography," "Physical Geography," "Human Geography," and "Environmental Geography." Each essay occupies approximately 30 pages, addressing appropriate subtopics, and includes a two- or three-page bibliography. The essay section concludes with a chapter of case studies on specific locations where particular geographical concepts are applied in solutions to pressing problems. Part 2 offers a quick-reference encyclopedia, allowing the reader to revisit 101 terms, themes, and concepts mentioned in the earlier essays and to explore them in greater depth. Entries range from one to three pages in length. Occasional images, maps, or photos accompany the entries, but text predominates. Each entry concludes with a brief list of references for further reading. A short overall bibliography and the biographies of all contributors conclude this work, a worthwhile acquisition for any library wanting to update its geography reference collection.Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers. | ||||
