![]() The latest work in the series of archaeologically focused monographs from the Smithsonian Institution, this lavishly illustrated (and affordably priced) volume chronologically sets forth the known data retrieved by excavation for six time periods covering the last four million years and their current analysis. Each section is prefaced by a world map that notes the locations discussed, and provides a time line of key events for each era at the bottom of every third page to help the reader stay oriented. The highly readable text is written by an international group of 14 Canadian, British, American, and Peruvian archaeologists, both practicing and retired. Brief biographical profiles of archaeologists who did important work on a specific site (such as Jericho or Knossos), geographic region, or cultural era are included under some site entries. Virtually all of the illustrations are color photographs, and monochrome photos and maps are occasionally interspersed. A brief glossary of frequently used terms and abbreviations is provided. Contemporary technologies and field techniques are covered in the final section, "How Archaeology Works." As the subtitle suggests, a core reference work for all college, university, and museum libraries.Summing Up: Essential. All levels of students through researchers/faculty; general readers.

![]() These two superb volumes constitute a major contribution to topographical studies of ancient Rome. In volume 1 (640 pages), editor Carandini (La Sapienza Univ., Italy) provides readers with numerous high-quality, color illustrations and an extensive bibliography as well as historical essays by mostly Italian contributors. They trace the 14 regions Augustus Caesar established from the city's early times (ninth century BCE) to the early medieval period (AD tenth century). Volume 2 (463 pages) contains the tables referenced in the substantive first volume along with full-color topographical maps, detailed plans of urban sectors, reconstructed architectural complexes, and individual buildings from these areas plus, various archaeological objects found in them. Several useful indexes conclude the work. Although scholars will inevitably disagree with some of the contributors' identifications of monuments and their locations, reconstructed appearances, and other aspects, the great value of this atlas is in its bringing together a modern, updated, holistic view of the topography of ancient Rome--arguably one of the most important cities of Western civilization. This set will remain an invaluable reference resource for many years to come, suitable not only for scholarly research but also for the enjoyment of readers at all levels.Summing Up: Essential. All libraries, all levels.
