Portuguese, according to the editor, is an important but often overlooked language spoken by 203 million people in ten countries according to Ethnologue (CH, Nov'15, 53-1064); most of these speakers reside in Portugal and Brazil. Expansion of the Portuguese language in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America challenged its linguistic uniformity, so to create a common orthography, a commission in the late 20th century established the Orthographic Agreement of 1990 (Acordo Ortografico). This new dictionary has the advantage of being prepared after these new rules were implemented; the work is thus not simply a revision, as are most older dictionaries. Created by a large international team of experts working over four years, this bilingual dictionary incorporates Brazilian and European-Portuguese, and American and British-English terms. Beyond presenting the meaning and translation of a word, current usage for most terms is illustrated in idiomatic sentences. Using English and Portuguese electronic database corpuses of over 2 billion words for each language, this Oxford dictionary aims to be more comprehensive and eliminate the outdated usage and translation problems of older works.
