Mulla (anthropology, Marquette Univ.) has made a very important contribution to understanding the phenomenon of rape.  In her diligent study of and research on rape victims, she provides insight into seeing how boundaries are blurred in the medical and legal treatment of the rape victim undergoing emergency care.  She shows how caregivers, who may have a rape victim's best interests in mind, might be unwittingly exacerbating their trauma.  For example, Mulla describes how the alacrity and intensity with which nurses work to gather evidence can negate their caring presence with the victim.  Her writing style is both informative and thought provoking, offering a clear, detailed account of the legalities and medical regimen in the treatment of rape victims.  At the same time, her case examples sensitively illuminate the upset that these victims experience in their personal lives.  Another valuable feature is the excellent bibliography, useful for further reference and investigation.  The book is a wake-up call for professionals/practitioners who work with rape victims.  It is also a much-needed resource for academicians, researchers, and students in many disciplines, including nursing, mental health, and law.Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above.
